Would you rather win a mid-major 100 (Bear 100, Cascade Crest 100, Bighorn 100) or be top 10 at Western States 100?

Supplements

So, for whatever reason, I've always been interested in supplements, vitamins, etc. I guess just looking for that extra edge. Anyway, I've tried some different stuff but on the vitamin side, I've never had any real concrete feelings that something truly works. "Recoverite" is probably the closest supplement that I know really works for me. I bought some cow brains or something from a guy a while ago but that seemed to pretty much just have a placebo effect. Anyway, so, I'm curious what you out there use and what you have had success with. Chime on in!

Vespa is the miracle juice. I don't know how or why, but the stuff just eases my energy levels throughout a long endurance event. I'm a big fan.

I'm also a fan of Optygen, cardyceps that help boost your anaerobic threshold. I notice it more on the bike and short sprint stuff. It's worth 2-3 beats/minute.

Recoverite is pretty good too.

You know what's funny, I have tried it and it just didn't seem to work for me. Seems as if it works for some and not others.
I'll look into the Optygen... thanks for the ideas!

As a manager of a bike store I have tried everything over and over the last 10 years and for me I always go back to Hammer Nutrition products. The company backs everything up with good solid research. (my opinion) Heed, Perpetuem, Recoverite, Endurolytes, Premium Insurance Caps, and Race Caps Supreme are always on my shelf.

I use all this stuff for both running and cycling.

I have a hiatel hernia so anything acidic puts a hurting on me such as accelerade, myogenesis, clif bar, and gu. Not that I don't think they will work they just dont work for me because of my issue. I don't have that problem with Hammer.

First Endurance has probably the best line of supplements geared for endurance athletes. Robert Kunz buys the best raw material on the market. A little spendy but you get what you pay for. He's a triathlete himself so he knows the needs (ie free radicals) of an endurance athlete.

In particular you asked about multivitamins, FI has a endurance based formula called Multi V. When you get into the herb side of things the best component to look for is a standardized extract, giving you a percent of active ingredient. If you don't see a percent then most likely it's just the whole plant in the pill - you want the active ingredient.

FastEd, thanks for the info. Yeah, I really am looking for a solid multi vitamin. I'll check that out pronto. You running Leadville this year? I'm excited to come out for it!

I don't think I'll be running Leadville. I kinda wanna get up to your neck of the woods and do Where's Waldo. We'll see though, it's a long way off.

My coach in college said something that I think is true - If you are looking for a "miracle" supplement or pill to give you an edge over competition, you are already guilty of cheating.

Another true thing he said - Supplement manufacturers know people will do anything, at any price, to get what they believe will give them a competitive edge, even if the supplement claims are unsubstantiated an baseless.

I am a huge fan of all the Hammer Nutrition products. Their products are all of the highest quality and all work for me. What I really like is that none of their products are promoted as miracle products and everything is backed up by lots of research. As I use more and more of them I just have more energy, get injured less (almost never), I recover faster, and just feel better. Good stuff.

I 2nd what "Bikes, Beans & Bluegrass" said. I love "Hammer" products. I too, have had a history of IBS/Gastrointestinal problems. I've tried every brand out there, but "Hammer" is the only one that keeps me from "christening" the trails. My fav. "Hammer" product is "Perpetuem." I use it on long climbing/multi-pitch days & while surfing. Its hard for me to eat something solid before going out in the ocean. All of the motion on my tummy makes me feel sick (kind of like swimming on a full stomach). "Perpetuem" in a little bit of yogurt/kefir/cottage cheese before I go out in the water does the trick. In addition, I also take 6 capsules of coconut oil ("Jarrow" brand) to keep my energy levels sustained.

Clarification: I take 6 capsules of "Jarrow" brand coconut oil per hour to sustain my energy levels.
